There seems to be a certain amount of circular reasoning here. Not saying I disagree with everything... but I think there are some unexamined foundations that need, umm, examining.

Most of the gospels are... stories. Christ did this, Peter did that, Pilate said this... etc. These stories include literal preaching.

I think some of what is happening is a mismatch between what people expect and what we deliver. But we need to be careful not to assume that *what they expect is a good thing*. It could be that they are into ear-tickling

2Ti_4:3  For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

We need to be prepared for God to say, "Yes, what your audience wants is the wrong thing. It will lead them to destruction.
